Gum Surgery / Flap Surgery
Gum Surgery, also known as Flap Surgery, is a specialized periodontal procedure performed to treat advanced gum disease and restore the health of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. When plaque and tartar accumulate below the gum line, they can cause deep periodontal pockets, leading to infection, inflammation, gum recession, and even tooth loss if left untreated. Flap surgery is recommended when non-surgical treatments such as scaling and root planing are not sufficient to control the disease.
During the procedure, the dentist or periodontist carefully lifts the gum tissue to gain access to the roots of the teeth and underlying bone. This allows for the thorough removal of plaque, tartar, and bacteria from deep pockets that cannot be reached through routine cleaning methods. The area is then cleaned and, if necessary, damaged bone may be reshaped to promote proper healing. Finally, the gum tissue is repositioned and secured to reduce pocket depth and support healthy gum attachment.
Flap surgery helps eliminate infection, reduce gum inflammation, prevent further bone loss, and improve overall oral health. It also makes daily oral hygiene easier by reducing deep pockets where bacteria can accumulate. With proper post-operative care and regular dental visits, patients can maintain healthier gums, protect their natural teeth, and enjoy a stronger, more confident smile.
